Our Mission

Bingham Park has been the center of outdoor activity in Hawley, and for that matter, northern Wayne County and western Pike County, for countless years. Originally, it was the hub of the barge and Tow Path operations for timber and coal transportation to the Delaware River and points south. As the transportation industry evolved, its central location lead to the logical place for recreational activities in the area.

The land, which was originally donated to “the Borough of Hawley” in March of 1929 by Adelbert and Margaret Bingham, became the place to be - whether it was swimming in Lake Tether or playing baseball on the best field around! The gazebo was later identified as a landmark in 1936.

As time went on the lake was filled in, additional ballfields were added, tennis and basketball courts were built and a skate park was constructed. Of course, there was a playground and plenty of room to enjoy the outdoors.

Over the years many memories were made by both local athletes and citizens, not to mention the countless visitors who have enjoyed the park! However, like many other similar facilities, the park has aged, and its facilities have fallen in need of repair.

In 2007, the tragedy experienced by a local family became the initiative for the beginning of the revitalization of the Bingham Park. The CJR Memorial Foundation raised local money and received substantial grants to begin the task of building the children’s playground, the toddler playground, and the much-needed restrooms. This project was ultimately completed with the help of additional local businesses and citizens.

During the completion of the playground projects it became obvious that the park was being enjoyed by people from all around the area. The amount of activity was actually quite surprising! This brought to light the fact that the condition of the existing facilities needed to be revitalized in order to bring them in line with the new work that was recently completed.

“The Group” was formed by several local businesspeople with connections to Bingham Park and Hawley Borough. It is the aspiration of these individuals to help facilitate the Revitalization of Bingham Park. With their own money, they have set off on a mission to explore the feasibility of a total revitalization of the “Peoples Park” for the benefit of our community and generations to come.  A coordinated effort with the assistance of Hawley Officials, state and federal agencies, and other grass roots groups is underway.
